Khardung La. 5602 meters. The highest pass in the world reachable by car. 39 km north of Leh. I rented a bicycle and took it up by jeep. There was snow up there. A lot of snow. Creaking beneath my feet exactly the same way as it does back home. It felt the same cold when it got in my shoes. The road was quite clear, some mush, mud, poodles of water, potholed tarmac. Few kilometers down the road the mush was gone. So was the tarmac. The sand appeared and I started to swerve through the bends. But half the way down the tarmac made its comeback and that time perfectly smooth. The ride turned to freefall, the brakes were suddenly unneccessary.
If I wanted I did not have to pedal at all. For whole 39 km. Including the photo breaks the it took me two hours. And if not were Rs 900 I would do it once more. Peace: It was the highest place I have ever been.
