From Urfa to Mardin it is two or three hours by bus. Mardin is built on hill and you can see all the way to Syria from there. In the fort high above the city army has its radar and so it is closed to public. All Turks say that Mardin is güzel (beautiful) and they are right. There are mosques and medresas and wonderful houses and bus stops built of stone in traditional with Pepsi logo reliefs. It reminds Morocco, old town could be a quarter in Fes and the new town would pass for Ville Nouvelle over teher.
Only the food is dismal. İskender kebap [WIKI] for lunch was more or less OK (but still, it was kebap), cold lahmacun [WIKI] calls for cook's execution. Lahmacun is not to be served cold. Never ever.
