Dhobi ghat. Huge washing machine under open sky. At the Mahalaxmi suburban train station. Hemmed between railtracks and two highways. Water and soap. Barrels of bleach. And some more water.

Every piece of laundry is market with a cryptic label.
Soaked up laundry is scrubbed with brush.
Washing follows.
In the end the dirt is beaten out.The only machines in the whole process are centrifuges. Laundry comes out almost dry, hanging it for half an hour in the sun is enough.
